An open letter to the Digital Wedding Forum

Posted by on Apr 27, 2013 in Uncategorized | 19 comments

Hi folks. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Joe Ciarcia. I first joined the DWF in September of 2003. Over the years I have spent a great deal of time participating in this community and in doing so have amassed over 18,000 posts. In addition to participating as a community member, I also volunteered my time as a forum moderator, a job which is completely thankless for the most part (and unpaid). I have almost 10 years of intimate history with the DWF and with that in mind I would like to call out the people who are...

Digital Wedding Forum: No longer private?

It has been brought to my attention that the DWF has recently made some posts public. A post on the DWF claims that they have taken measures to obscure identities. I will not comment on whether or not I feel these measures are enough to protect our identies, rather, I will let you judge for yourself. Try entering the following search on Google: site:http://www.digitalweddingforum.com “Joe Ciarcia” If you haven’t figured it out, replace my name within the quotes with your name (the quotes should be included in the search) and...

Backup strategies for photographers

Backup strategies for photographers

Back in the days of film, your sole copy of data was either a negative or a slide. If that got damaged or lost, that was it. Of course with negatives and slides, backing up your media wasn’t really practical. Things have changed a great deal since the days of film as digital capture has changed the game. Multiple backups can be made for very little cost, yet I find it interesting how many photographers can easily be convinced that they need extremely expensive tools for backing up data such as products made by Drobo and other products...

New frame options by Gamut Prints

Gamut Prints is now offering framed Fine Art Prints. Are you currently offering frames as an option for your clients? If not, think about this: When your client buys a print from you, they’re going to need to get it framed. If you’re not offering frames, they’re going to take their $$$ somewhere else. That’s lost revenue! By offering fully framed Fine Art Prints, not only are you increasing your profits, you’re also offering your client the benefit of convenience. It’s a win win situation. To find out how to...

i1Display Pro vs. Spyder 4 and Spyder 4 quick review

So I’ve had the Spyder 4 Elite since early January and I’ve had a few questions about it. The most common question asked is with regards to how it fairs against the i1Display Pro. In order to do a comparison of just the hardware I need a platform that supports both the i1Display Pro and the Spyder 4 otherwise the results you’re comparing will include the software that comes with each respective package as well. Fortunately Argyll CMS, an excellent open source calibration package, recently added support for the Spyder 4 which...

X-Rite i1Display Pro quick review

On June 21st, X-Rite announced their latest and greatest colorimeter, the i1Display Pro. How does it stack up against previous sensors? I’ll get right into it, put simply, the i1Display Pro hardware is phenomenal. This is the best colorimeter ever produced for under $1000. Should you buy one? Well… it’s complicated. Why? It’s the software. Personally I’m a bit surprised. I like Gamut Prints to be on top of what our clients are using. As such we own a number of different packages. On the software side of things we...

Do Macs need antivirus software?

Do Macs need antivirus software?

Actually the better question to ask would be “do Macs need anti-malware software”. Technically speaking a computer virus is code that self-replicates, and propagates by attaching itself to other applications. The term “virus” is often erroneously used to refer to malware but regardless of what you call it, yes, Mac users should be running anti-malware software. But “Macs don’t get viruses malware” -While the variety of malware for OS X isn’t what it is under Windows, OS X is most...

Adobe requires current version to upgrade to new versions

In 2012, Adobe will implement a massive policy change, and price restructuring but some of those changes are going into effect immediately. This will probably end up being a good deal for major corporations but it looks like it might not be a good thing for sole proprietors and small studios who only use one or two pieces of Adobe’s software. So what are the changes? Effective immediately, if you’re using Photoshop CS4 or earlier (or any other program that falls under the Master Suite), you will not be allowed to upgrade unless...

Is the Mac Pro on the endangered species list?

Could this be it? The end of the Mac Pro? If you don’t follow the Apple rumor mill here’s a quick update. A few of the rumor sites such as 9to5mac.com and macrumors.com have been reporting that the 2010 Mac Pro update may have been the last Mac Pro ever, and that Apple may have been considering End Of Lifing the Mac Pro as early as May of this year. Will it happen? Well it is a rumor although it’s one of those rumors that quite plausible given that the Mac Pro barely contributes a drop in the bucket to...
